Each time I was pregnant, I started out with a burst of excitement. I was thrilled to be bringing a new life into this world. But once the six week mark hit everything changed. I was hit by the horrors of morning sickness and fatigue. And then my pregnancy became all about feeling sick and tired. Sure, there were moments of excitement and anticipation. But mostly I was immersed in feeling bad.
Maybe you started your pregnancy with excitement and have now found yourself in a rut for one reason or another. For some of you it might be fatigue or sickness. For others it might be that you are impatiently waiting to get pregnancy over with.
No matter what you’re waiting for to pass, I want you to know that you don’t have to spend the rest of your pregnancy in this rut! You can make a choice today to approach things from a different place. Every day we get to wake up with a clean slate. And in all honesty you don’t have to even wait for a new day. You are always just one thought away from a great thought. And those thoughts impact what happens in your body, mind and spirit. Start changing your thoughts and routines now and you will change your experience.
Here are 3 tips for getting out of a rut:
1. Acknowledge that you’re in a rut and figure out the cause
You might not have realised that you are in a rut. If you think about a literal rut, it’s a track worn into the ground by repeated use. You might not even be aware that your thoughts are creating a rut for you. Take some time to journal about what thoughts you have been thinking repeatedly, or what routines you have repeated so often that they are wearing a rut into your mind. Once you know what thoughts and habits are causing the rut you are on your way to breaking out of the rut.
2. Take control of your thoughts and routines
Going back to the example of a rut worn into the ground, it can be very difficult to get out of that rut. It may take repeated attempts to break out, but with persistence and the right tools it can be done! So what you are going to do is use the powerful conscious mind to change your thoughts and routines.
One tool that can help is affirmations. For instance, if you are in the habit of thinking about how sick you feel all day, change it up with an affirmation such as “I digest my foods with easy. I am healthy and full of vitality.” You can find details on writing your own affirmations here.
Another powerful tool that can help you get out of a rut is hypnosis. There are plenty of self-hypnosis programs available online that can help you get out of a rut by working at a subconscious level where you habitual thoughts and actions are programmed.
As I mentioned, it does take persistence. It took time to get into the rut. Don’t stress if it’s taking a while to get out. Acknowledge yourself for doing the work along the way, and the progress you’re making. Even if you’re just making ‘baby steps’ you are on the right track.
3. Shift your focus
Pregnancy can be all consuming, but there is more to your life than pregnancy. Take some time each day to do things that are not baby-focused. Getting into this habit now will really serve you as you transition into motherhood.
If you’re stressed, you could start by finding things to do that alleviate stress. This could be something like massage, meditation, reading, journaling, or listening to relaxing music, or going for a walk outdoors.
If you’re just plain bored while you’re waiting for baby to arrive, try incorporating mindfulness into your daily life. At least once a day, take time to be mindful of the moment that you are in. Use all of your senses to take in everything about this moment. It’s a good reminder to stop living in the future!
I’d also recommend journaling about the things that bring you joy. Write a list of 20 things that bring you joy in life, and be sure to incorporate one or more of those things into your life each day.
